A course entitled Environment and Society in a Changing Arctic was given by the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in July 2013. The course included a 14-day stay on Svalbard, with teaching and research in the field.
The field research consisted of observations of the environmental impact of climate change and interviews with researchers and actors from the business community regarding their strategies in a changing Arctic. The course also addressed the consequences for those who live in the Arctic and the growing interest in natural resources, sea travel and policy issues in and around the Arctic.
The course was arranged by KTH in cooperation with the University of Illinois. The course was closely associated with the Assessing Arctic Futures research project (MISTRA), which may use the results for research purposes. The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat contributed support for the field course.
