The LASHIPA project (Large Scale HIstorical Exploitation of Polar Areas) was an endorsed and financed research project within the International Polar Year 2007–2008, with participants from the Netherlands, Sweden, USA, Great Britain, Norway and Russia. The aim of the project was to explain the development of natural resource exploitation in the polar areas from the 17th century until today, and the ensuing consequences for the geopolitical situation and the local environment.
