The areas of ice and permafrost on Mars contain landforms that are reminiscent of the landforms that can be found in the earth’s arctic environments, such as on Svalbard. Svalbard also has a continuous permafrost layer, which is similar to conditions on Mars. On earth this environment is referred to as the periglacial environment.
This research project studied the periglacial environment on earth as a comparable environment to the cold regions of Mars. By studying these land areas we can gain a better understanding of how the Martian climate has evolved over time.
