IceCube is a neutrino telescope built in the ice at the geographic South Pole, next to the American Amundsen-Scott Station.
IceCube is a major international project involving nearly 250 people from 38 institutions in 10 countries. The National Science Foundation in the USA is responsible for the operation of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, and is the project’s biggest financial supporter. From Sweden, the Swedish Research Council and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation have both contributed support. Researchers from Stockholm and Uppsala universities are involved in the project, although none worked in Antarctica during the 2011/12 season.
