Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) was the forerunner of what today is IceCube – the world's largest neutrino telescope.
The feasibility of using transparent ice at large depth in Antarctica for neutrino telescopes was shown by the AMANDA collaboration in the 1990’s. The scientific goals for these telescopes are e.g. to use the neutrino particles to investigate the question of the “dark matter” of the Universe and to search for the sources of the highest energy cosmic rays.
