The team is now on a ship! The S.A. Agulhas II is the ship bringing the team’s heavy equipment to Antarctica, including snowmobiles, sleds, and living modules. The ship was delayed leaving Cape Town, and is now at the edge of the ice shelf unloading its cargo for transport to SANAE IV, the South African research station. It will likely take a few days for our equipment to be unloaded, and then we will be able to move on to the next stage of our expedition.
We flew by helicopter from Troll research station to the ship yesterday. Being on the ship allows us to do planning with the helicopter pilots who will support part of our work, as well as continue safety and medical training. We are also getting amazing views of the edge of the ice shelf, icebergs, and sea ice.
