Since 1996/97, IMAU (the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research at Utrecht University) has operated Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) at 10 different sites. In the course of the years, six have been removed after several years of data collection; the remaining four AWS will be retained at so called key-locations for longer term monitoring.
Ice cores have proven to be an excellent tool for paleo-atmosphere studies and climate reconstructions. Sweden participates in several ongoing deep ice core drilling projects in Antarctica and on Greenland. We measure soluble ionic species and insoluble particles along these ice cores.
Ever since the research station Wasa was built in Dronning Maud Land (DML) in 1988/89, glaciologists have been able to maintain a continous scientific program in the Vestfjella-Heimfrontfjella area.
Many people are unaware that the atmosphere carries a continuous electric current and, even during fair weather, there is a strong electrostatic electric field, up to 200 volts per meter, close to the ground.
